AirMarker: visual signaling and locating system for emergencies at sea

Versilia Marine Service is the first official dealer for AirMarker in Italy, a visual signalling system designed to make a person or vessel easier to locate in an emergency at sea. Many boaters and water sports enthusiasts use flares, whistles, radios or electronic transmitters—useful tools, but ones subject to limitations relating to signal duration, coverage, contact with water or visibility conditions. AirMarker is designed to complement these systems with a persistent visual reference: a highly visible SOS balloon that rises above the water’s surface and marks the location to be found in the sky. The system works offline and can be used anywhere, without relying on a mobile network or an internet connection.

A persistent visual signal, even in difficult conditions

The AirMarker principle is to create a highly visible reference point above sea level, where a person in the water or a small vehicle might be difficult to distinguish. Once activated, the balloon remains connected to the user via a dedicated line and can reach a height of approximately 5 meters. Its elevated position and high-visibility color allow the signal to be recognized even from a distance, in the presence of rough seas, waves or reduced light.

To support daytime reporting, the system integrates a waterproof LED light which allows the balloon to remain identifiable even at dusk and during the night. The signal is designed to last up to three days and three nights, a useful feature when search operations take longer. This way, AirMarker maintains a clear visual reference of the position to be reached over time.

An international accolade for R.Four

With the launch of R.Four, developed specifically for marine use, AirMarker became the first start-up in the history of the DAME Design Awards to receive recognition in the “Security & Safety on Board”category. The award recognises the design work behind the system and its ability to introduce an innovative solution to marine safety, bringing a new approach to the visual signalling of emergencies to international attention.

AirMarker R.Four and R.Five: lightweight, compact and ready to use

R.Four and R.Five are configurations developed for marine use and stem from the experience gained with the R.One model in the outdoor sector. Before being launched on the market, the system underwent laboratory testing and field trials in extreme conditions to verify its operation, durability and ease of use.

The two solutions are lightweight and compact, making them easy to transport and integrate into safety equipment. The system is ready to use and designed for simple, intuitive operation, allowing it to be activated quickly even in an emergency.

The device operates offline and worldwide, without relying on mobile network coverage or an internet connection. The R.Five configuration also includes a 100% waterproof and buoyant DryBag, designed to protect AirMarker in the marine environment and keep it easy to handle onboard or during activities on the water.

The SOS balloon and the LED light make it possible to signal a call for help with high visibility, creating a marker above the water’s surface that can be spotted from a distance, even in choppy conditions. The system thus introduces a specific approach to visual signalling of emergencies at sea, based on persistence, ease of use and independence from communication networks.

AirMarker Balloon and radar location support

TheAirMarker Balloon does more than provide a visual signal. The balloon features a special innovative coating designed to positively influence its radar signature and, under certain conditions, provide an additional reference point for units involved in rescue operations. The use of search radar equipment can therefore help improve the ability to locate the balloon, providing additional guidance for vessels involved in the search.

Radar detection cannot, however, be guaranteed. The balloon’s response may vary depending on the parameters of the radar system used, weather conditions, distance, altitude reached and movement dynamics. Complete visual or radar detection cannot therefore be technically guaranteed in every operational scenario. This feature should be considered additional location support, while the system’s primary function remains to provide a visual indication of the position.
